Are you Feeling Fat?

By Melissa D. L. Jacobs

Do you ever sit in church and feel as if you’ve gained a little weight?  The seat you are sitting in, which may be nice and wide, starts to fit a little snug and begins to feel uncomfortable.  Your mind begins to wonder and you recall hearing the pastor speak on the topic of discussion just last week. And in your own private Bible study time you touched on the very same topic the previous week.

It is around these times that I feel a little like a fat cat sitting up on the church pews eating away at the buffet offered almost daily from the house of God.  I begin to think more of why I study the Word of God and why I attend Bible Study.  For what reason do I learn?  Do I learn simply for my own understanding, of course.  But once I have grown in my salvation, what should be my next step.  Should I continue to sit in God’s house and become overweight from my spiritual food?

According to my Word, it tells me I should be teaching others about Jesus and how to obey his commandments.  How often do we forget that we are learning to feed others? Why should we eat up all the food and not share?  The only way others will learn about our Father is if his children (us) take the time to "teach" them.

We have so much spiritual food to share, but we gobble it all up while our fellow brothers and sisters starve.  Sadly there are people in the world who have never heard the name of Jesus.  There are people who do not have the luxury of owning a Bible.  How many do you own?  We have a lot of work to do, so we need to get off the pews.  Make an effort to go out and get some Holy Spirit led exercise, running back and forth to the ends of the earth.

If the ends of the earth are too far for you, then try down the street.  Just make sure to teach others about our sovereign God and His son, Jesus Christ.  Offer them the sweet gift of salvation.  Who knows, you may even get into better physical shape.  You definitely will get that spiritual woman into shape.  So the next time you are feeling spiritually fat, you know what to do, Right!

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the earth." (NIV) Matthew 28:18-20
