We women obsess about our hair. Finding a good hair stylist, is not different from finding our mates for life. The search can bring about several one-date wonders on the journey towards connection. We want a stylist who understands our every desire: an easy style that is not only trendy, but also face-flattering. We expect them to do magic with our uncooperative hair. And they must know how to mix up just the right color to disguise our natural flaws (whether it be gray or mousy brown). They supply the "fix" we need for our chemically dependent hair.
The best way to locate the perfect stylist is to find a hairstyle on someone else that you like, and then ask them which salon they frequent. I recently complimented my friend Brooke about her new 'do, and she referred me to Daniel. She said he was worth the trip out of town.
I also liked the new hairstyle on my friend Linda, and she said she went to Daniel, in Carlsbad. So I requested the phone number from Brooke, and eagerly anticipated my appointment with Daniel. I allowed plenty of time for the thirty minute trip, and to my chagrin, I could not locate the salon. I called Daniel and discovered he is located in Roswell, which is 75 minutes in the other direction from Carlsbad. We rescheduled and I came home disappointed. Sometimes when we are desperate for something, we don’t do all of the necessary research, and end up jumping to the wrong conclusion. Later I discovered there are 3 different Daniels who do hair in our area. I wanted Brooke's Daniel!
I enjoyed my first "date" with him so much, I made an appointment for a total hair redo. This was going to be my biggest hair adventure ever. Foil! Again, I waited for the day, as if I was marking off dates on the advent calendar prior to Christmas. Finally it was time, and I jetted off to Roswell. During my drive, my mind daydreamed about my potential new look. Anticipation caused me to bolt out of the car into the salon. But to my dismay, Daniel was not there. He called in sick and couldn't reach me to reschedule. I traveled 45 minutes from Artesia, for this? Men would have severed the relationship at that point, but not me. I was in pursuit of the perfect hairstyle, and it was merely postponed, but not out of reach. I rescheduled, and when I next met Daniel, we finally got it right. It was a hair partnership to "dye" for.
Women, we must confess that we are probably overly concerned with our hair. But first impressions and the opinions of others matters to us.
1 Samuel 16:7b, “for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”
Others can’t help but think of us based partly on what they see. They do not have the ability to read our minds or see into our hearts, so they study our physical appearance and our disposition. We want to represent the Lord well, by having a fashionable feminine hairstyle.
1 Corinthians 11 says our hair is our glory. This represents our surrendered will to God. It is also a woman’s covering. The word “covering” in the Bible often represented a believer’s prayer position before God. Hair said a lot in biblical times, and it says a lot today.
What does your hair say about you?
